   Just to give some background I’ve been playing Codemasters games since Colin McRae Dirt and have almost always enjoyed them. I don’t really play their games for an in-depth simulation experience; it’s usually more like I have a little time to kill and want to have some fun flogging a car around a track or through a rally course.I thought the original GRID was really fun and have been playing it again recently while waiting for this one to come out. I’ve had this game pre-ordered for months and was really looking forward to playing it…when I finally got hold of it I played it for a little over an hour before getting bored and finding something else to do.So what’s wrong with it you ask? It seems like the accounting department was calling most of the shots. They cut out the cockpit view saying that nobody used it and could spend their time better elsewhere. For starters it sounds like “95% of players never use it” is a number they just pulled out of thin air, and I don’t really see where all of that time “better spent elsewhere” was spent. For a sequel to a game that came out five years ago, it doesn’t feel really evolved beyond the original. Actually, considering the things they cut out, it’s less of a game than the original.All in all, it’s not a bad game and there’s nothing about it that’s a deal-killer…but it does feel like it could have been a much better game than it is if more time and effort was put into making it.Edit: This game actually gets worse as you progress through it; the shoddy physics engine makes driving every one of the more advanced cars nearly impossible. If cars actually handled the way this game portrays them, 100% of super-car owners would be dead.

   PHYSICS AND HANDLING – excellent – they hit the sweet spot – hit a corner fast on good line – tires squeel and smoke, rear end gets light but not squirley.DIFFICULTY 5 choices (GOOD JOB CM)- I’m a casual gamer, play on very easy and I get a fun challenging race. Win percent about 10% – easy to finish top 5, must drive a great race to win.GRAPHICS & SOUND – Cars and tracks look outstahnding, no frame rate drops. Sound – hey its race cars nuff said.AI – Much improved but not there yet. Stil too much banging and rear ending – tuff to drive completely clean race. As I race it geats better.They dropped junker figure 8 – Yeah.Dropped cockpit view, always just a novelty for me. Instead you get more and better tracks – I like the trade-off.What I hoped for and expected – playing the heck out of it.

   I remember when Race Driver: GRID came out back in 2008 I believe, and it was just a marvel! The graphics were stupendous, the game play was the result of a racing game that hit a stunning median between arcade and sim style racing, and the approach to the campaign, where you were built your own racing team from the ground up was really cool.GRID 2 has improved much of these features, but for some reason the spark of the first game just isn’t there anymore. The career system, although sort of clever and well thought out, just isn’t as addictive and engaging as the first one. If you didn’t pre-order you miss out on what seems like a lot of DLC and extra tracks/cars. (The DLCs are expensive too, about $6 or $7 for maybe a car and two tracks) Also there’s a lot of rinse and repeat in the racing tracks which contributes to an overall feeling of redundancy.However GRID 2 does excel at a lot of things. If you always complained about customization in the first game, then don’t worry because it’s much better in GRID 2. Each car you have can have a different livery, and there’s a bundle of options to choose from when tricking out your roadsters. Multiplayer in this game is great too. They finally added split screen which is a plus, and the online multiplayer component is done very well. Codemasters does a good job of sucking you into a competitive racing sort of game, and it can be equally frustrating and rewarding with the investment of a lot of time.Overall, this is a great game, but it just doesn’t captivate quite like the first one did. I don’t think I would pay $60 retail for this ever again. Once the price dips down to around $30 or something, I’d say it’s a must buy.

   This is a game that should have been extremely difficult to mess up. Codemasters found a way. Not only have things gone awry, but the game is a step backward from the original Grid in nearly every objective and subjective way. That’s no small feat to accomplish. It has no right to exist. It doesn’t have a conflicted personality in terms of “sim” or “arcade”– It has no personality.A quick list of the good– A nice collection of high-performance current-day (circa 2010-13) cars. A few somewhat cute game modes that require precision and style instead of just speed. Beyond a few details here and there I can’t think of anything else.Bad? Everything else. The cars have no “feel”. Besides the cars being grouped into one of 4 “tiers”, there is zero discernible performance difference between them. Some of them will kick out and drift more than others, but that’s all; At high speeds they’re all nearly impossible to control. Acceleration and braking are hugely exaggerated. The cars will only oversteer and refuse to understeer.You cannot adjust settings on the cars. You cannot modify the cars. You will race the same half-dozen races about 20 times each. This so-called “racing series” of the game’s storyline doesn’t actually feature any racing cars. You will always start in the back of the pack no matter how long or short your race. An “endurance” race is timed for 5-7 minutes. Your total mileage in career mode will pitifully be in the 1000-1500 range.No location library. The majority of the game falls onto the 5 “city courses”, and there are a mere 4 full real-world tracks. Four. Horrible, horrible selection versus the original. There is zero replay value. Higher difficulties are simply impossible with the low level of car control the game offers. As a veteran of almost every type of racing game for the past 15 years I found even “medium” (3 of 6 levels) challenging to consistently win on.Heinously insulting is a lack of a “practice mode” or anything similar. There is no “go out and drive” feature. Nothing. At minimum you have to set yourself up against a handful of extra stupid AI cars for a set number of laps, which is asinine. This might have been a 3-star review had I at least just been able to go out and drive. This is the simplest of simple features to have in a racing game of any kind and it’s beyond me as to why this is not included.Perhaps the worst part of this experience was the “ending”. You get pumped up for the annual championship series with all sorts of encouraging messages like “this will open a new world of experiences to you!”… but there are no more experiences. Merely the end. I was told I’d have great things available to me and was instead kicked in the teeth. Up until that point I’d only been somewhat disappointed, but it was the final straw. Well, there ARE more avenues, but they’re in the form of very expensive DLC. “Racing versions” of cars shouldn’t cost the player $5 each when you’re playing a racing game. Even by current-day standards this is an A-grade ripoff.Do yourself a favor and buy the original. Grid 2 will never be worth even bargain bin prices. For the first time in awhile I feel I’ve been entirely swindled. Even had this been the original Grid +new cars and few new locations I would have been satisfied, but somehow this very very low bar of expectation was not reached. Grid 2 has fewer game modes, fewer cars, fewer tracks and everything insultingly simplified versus its predecessor.What happened to you, Codemasters? Your Dirt series has been fun and your 2011-12 F1 releases are well-executed.
